Better Chillies

The Better Trading Company is working together in a partnership with the Elephant Pepper Company managing the production and export of tabasco chilies in Zimbabwe. This successful collaboration was launched mid 2009 as a trial project growing chillis in a mixed large and small farm model.

Better Product

Following the success of the first season, during which 20 tons of tabasco chilies were grown and sold to a manufacturer, the project has been expanded with over 200 small-holder farmers planting this year. This large expansion in the project will see The Better Trading Company being able to supply significant volumes of product to its client.

Better Planet

Chillis are an environmentally friendly crop requiring little water, pest control or fertilization. Through our experienced and highly qualified advisory arm, Better Agriculture, The Better Trading Company is providing ongoing valuable input and assistance to the growers and their farming operations . Better Agriculture are experts on efficient and effective farming, using the latest technologies where possible coupled with good solid management practices. There is a great deal of focus placed on sustainable intercropping practices, soil management and water conservation.

Better People

Currently a baseline survey is underway, commissioned by The Better Trading Company, of those involved in the project and their environment. Key environmental and social pressures will be identified and addressed as an outcome.

The project is run on a hub and spoke model. The central hub provides management and expertise. It also aggregates, packs and ships the product for small out-growers and manages production inputs. This empowers the outgrowers through knowledge and gives them a greater chance of being competitive on the open market with larger scale producers.
